Hey, I saw the link to this on the SomethingAwful forums, where I lurk sometimes but don't have an account, otherwise I'd have replied there. See a doctor who knows something about cauda equina syndrome. I've had an acute case of it twice, springing from the same disc, and I had problems very much like what you're describing. It's very rare and often misdiagnosed. The only reason it was caught for me as early as it was is because I live in Cleveland and the medical network here is amazing.
